Day 1 – Puerto Maldonado / Jungle Arrival / Rainforest Exploration
Your Amazon journey begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. From here, we travel deep into the Tambopata rainforest, navigating by road and river until we reach one of the most biodiverse regions in the reserve. After a traditional Amazon welcome, your naturalist guide will introduce you to the rainforest ecosystem and the incredible wildlife that inhabits this protected wilderness.
In the afternoon, we venture onto a forest trail for our first wildlife exploration. As we walk beneath towering ceiba trees, ancient fig trees, and dense tropical vegetation, your guide will explain the medicinal plants and their importance to Indigenous communities and rainforest ecology. This is an excellent opportunity to observe several species of monkeys, colorful birds, butterflies, and other wildlife that thrive in the Amazon canopy. We also visit a canopy observation tower, offering a unique perspective above the rainforest and exceptional opportunities for birdwatching.
As night falls, we head onto the Tambopata River for a nocturnal wildlife excursion. Under the darkness of the Amazon, black caimans and spectacled caimans become active along the riverbanks, while the sounds of frogs, insects, and nocturnal birds fill the forest. Watching these remarkable reptiles in their natural habitat is one of the most memorable experiences of an Amazon rainforest expedition.
Day 2 – Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick / River Exploration / Night Wildlife Walk
The rainforest comes alive with the first light of dawn, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife is at its most active. We begin the day with an early journey to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in the Peruvian Amazon.
As the sun rises, vibrant flocks of scarlet macaws, blue-and-yellow macaws, green macaws, and numerous species of parrots gather along the clay-rich riverbank. From a carefully positioned observation point, we quietly witness this remarkable display of geophagy, a natural behavior in which birds consume mineral-rich clay that plays an important role in their diet and digestion. Breakfast is enjoyed while surrounded by the sights and sounds of this unforgettable Amazon experience.
Later, we continue exploring the waterways of the Tambopata rainforest by motorized boat or kayak, gliding through calm rivers and forest creeks where wildlife is often found along the shoreline. This peaceful excursion offers excellent opportunities to observe capybaras, freshwater turtles, kingfishers, herons, cormorants, and many other species that depend on the river ecosystem.
After sunset, we venture into the rainforest on a guided night walk, discovering a completely different side of the Amazon. As darkness transforms the forest, frogs, insects, spiders, tarantulas, and other nocturnal creatures emerge, while your naturalist guide reveals the fascinating adaptations and behaviors that make the Amazon one of the world’s richest nighttime ecosystems.
Day 3: Explore the Mammal Clay Lick and Amazon Fishing Experience
This 5 to 8-kilometer rainforest trail takes you through pristine tropical forest filled with towering fig trees, giant ceibas, and ancient shihuahuacos, while crossing small streams and wetlands that create the perfect habitat for Amazon wildlife. During the hike, we visit the mammal clay lick, a natural mineral-rich site where wildlife gathers to consume clay. Along the way, you may spot squirrel monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, red howler monkeys, peccaries, and many other species that inhabit the Tambopata National Reserve.
– In the afternoon, experience an authentic Amazon fishing adventure on the Tambopata River using traditional local fishing techniques alongside our expert jungle guides. For approximately two hours, we explore one of the most biodiverse rivers in the Peruvian Amazon, home to species such as payara, pacu (giant piranha), catfish including zúngaro, piro, and surubim, as well as the famous piranhas. This activity offers a unique opportunity to learn traditional Amazon fishing methods while surrounded by the incredible rainforest, with excellent chances of catching several native fish species.
Day 4 – Lake Sandoval / Tambopata National Reserve / Return to Puerto Maldonado
After breakfast, we return to the river and continue our expedition into the Tambopata National Reserve, heading toward the spectacular Lake Sandoval, one of the most iconic oxbow lakes in the Peruvian Amazon. The journey combines a scenic boat ride along the Madre de Dios River with a guided walk through pristine rainforest, where every step offers opportunities to encounter the extraordinary biodiversity of this protected ecosystem.
Upon reaching the lake, we board a traditional canoe and quietly explore its calm waters, surrounded by towering palms and flooded forests. Lake Sandoval is a sanctuary for remarkable wildlife, including giant river otters, black caimans, hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, and a rich variety of monkeys such as red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, brown capuchins, saddle-back tamarins, and titi monkeys. Your naturalist guide will help you spot wildlife while sharing insights into the ecology and conservation of this unique Amazon habitat.
After enjoying lunch immersed in the rainforest, we begin our return journey to Puerto Maldonado. This unforgettable Amazon adventure concludes with a transfer to the airport or bus station. By visiting the Tambopata National Reserve, you directly support the conservation of one of the world’s most biodiverse rainforests and contribute to the protection of its extraordinary wildlife and ecosystems.

Very memorable stay….great staff…excellent food
In April of this year-2017- I spent three days and two nights at this lodge/hotel and my stay there was one of the best experiences ot the 9 weeks that I spent in Peru.I booked the lodge through Gerson Valera in Puerto Maldonado.Transport to the lodge was by jeep as far as the Rio Tambopata
