DAY 1 – PUERTO MALDONADO / MONKEY ISLAND / NIGHT WILDLIFE EXPLORATION
Your Amazon adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon, where our naturalist team welcomes you at the airport or bus station. We travel to Puerto Capitanía and board a motorized canoe, navigating the beautiful Madre de Dios River surrounded by towering ceiba trees, palms, and lush rainforest that is home to hundreds of bird and mammal species.
After settling in, we head into the rainforest for our first guided jungle walk. This is the perfect introduction to the incredible biodiversity of Tambopata, where your guide will help you search for colorful butterflies, poison dart frogs, leaf-cutter ants, tropical birds, and the fascinating medicinal plants that have been used in the Amazon for generations.
In the afternoon, we visit the famous Monkey Island, one of the best places near Puerto Maldonado to observe wild primates. Keep your eyes on the forest canopy for playful brown capuchin monkeys and energetic squirrel monkeys as they leap between branches, forage for fruit, and interact with their family groups in their natural habitat.
As darkness falls, the rainforest comes alive during an exciting night wildlife excursion. Cruising quietly along the riverbanks, we search for black caimans, white caimans, capybaras, nocturnal birds, bats, frogs, and other creatures that only emerge after sunset. Watching the glowing red eyes of caimans reflected on the water is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in the Amazon.
DAY 2 – TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE / LAKE SANDOVAL / GIANT OTTERS & WILDLIFE
This morning we journey to the spectacular Lake Sandoval, one of the most biodiverse lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. After a short boat ride, we enter the protected rainforest and hike through pristine jungle, where giant ancient trees, orchids, heliconias, and towering palms create an incredible wildlife corridor filled with birds, insects, and monkeys.
Reaching the lake, we board a traditional canoe and paddle silently across the calm waters, allowing us to observe wildlife without disturbing it. Lake Sandoval is famous for its healthy population of giant river otters, one of the Amazon’s most iconic and endangered mammals. We also search for prehistoric-looking hoatzins, colorful kingfishers, herons, cormorants, black-capped capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, turtles, and both black caimans and other caiman species resting along the shoreline.
After lunch and a short break, we continue exploring the rainforest during the afternoon, when wildlife becomes more active. This is an excellent time to look for sloths resting high in the trees, families of capybaras along the riverbanks, toucans, macaws flying overhead, and many other birds that become active before sunset.
DAY 3 – CANOPY WALK / KAYAKING
Today we discover the Amazon from two completely different perspectives. We begin with a peaceful kayaking adventure on the Madre de Dios River, paddling through calm waters while observing birds, turtles, and riverside wildlife surrounded by the rainforest.
Next, we climb a 20-meter observation tower and enter the forest canopy through a network of suspension bridges suspended high above the jungle floor. The canopy is one of the richest habitats in the Amazon, offering opportunities to spot macaws, parrots, toucans, woodpeckers, tanagers, hummingbirds, and many other colorful bird species that rarely descend to ground level. From above, you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the endless rainforest while learning how wildlife thrives in this upper layer of the jungle ecosystem.
After an unforgettable day among the treetops and river, we return to the lodge for dinner as the sounds of the rainforest fill the evening.
DAY 4 – MACHIGUENGA COMMUNITY / RETURN TO PUERTO MALDONADO
After breakfast, we visit a local Machiguenga Indigenous family, whose ancestral knowledge has been closely connected to the Amazon rainforest for generations. During this cultural experience, you will learn about traditional hunting and fishing practices, medicinal plants, natural crafts, and the deep relationship between Indigenous communities and the surrounding forest.
This visit offers a unique opportunity to understand how people and wildlife have coexisted in the Peruvian Amazon for centuries, adding an important cultural perspective to your rainforest experience.
After the visit, we return to the river and travel by motorized boat along the Madre de Dios River back to Puerto Maldonado, enjoying one final chance to observe birds and wildlife along the riverbanks. Upon arrival, we transfer you to the airport, bus station, or your hotel in the city, bringing your unforgettable Amazon adventure to a close.

Not very communicative or friendly
The nature and location were great, but the nature staff were not very communicative or friendly- right from the start at the hostel where we checked in. My group stayed for 3 nights, 4 days and signed up for the Chuncho Clay Lick experience. We had about 5 different guides, and a very brief intro
