Day 1 – Arrival in the Heart of the Peruvian Amazon
Your Amazon adventure begins the moment you arrive at Puerto Maldonado Airport or the local bus station, where our naturalist team will warmly welcome you. After a short transfer through the gateway city of the Peruvian Amazon, we head to Puerto Capitanía, the river port where our journey into the rainforest begins.
We board a motorized canoe and navigate the majestic Madre de Dios River, one of the Amazon Basin’s most important waterways. As we travel deeper into the rainforest, keep your eyes open for herons, kingfishers, turtles resting on fallen logs, and the lush riverside vegetation that makes this ecosystem one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The boat ride offers your first true introduction to the Amazon jungle.
Upon arrival at our comfortable Amazon jungle lodge, you’ll have time to settle into your bungalow before meeting your expert local guide. We then begin an interpretive walk through the surrounding primary and secondary rainforest, where you’ll learn how towering ceiba trees, strangler figs, medicinal plants, palms, and countless tropical species interact within this extraordinary ecosystem. Your guide will reveal the hidden life of the forest, from colorful insects and frogs to birds and monkeys that inhabit the jungle canopy.
After a freshly prepared lunch featuring regional Amazon flavors, we continue by boat to Monkey Island, a protected island habitat located on the Madre de Dios River. Here, you’ll observe several species of wild monkeys, including playful squirrel monkeys and curious brown capuchins, while learning about their behavior, feeding habits, and the vital role they play in seed dispersal and rainforest regeneration.
As darkness transforms the rainforest, we embark on one of the Amazon’s most exciting experiences—a night wildlife boat excursion. The river comes alive after sunset, and with the help of powerful flashlights, we search for black caimans and white caimans, whose bright red eyes reflect across the water. We may also encounter capybaras, nocturnal birds, bats, and other animals that are rarely seen during daylight. Your guide will explain the remarkable adaptations that allow these species to thrive in the Amazon’s nighttime world.
After an unforgettable first day exploring the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, we return to our jungle lodge to relax and enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by the sounds of the forest—the chorus of frogs, insects, and distant wildlife that makes the Amazon a truly magical place.
Day 2 – Lake Sandoval: Wildlife in the Tambopata National Reserve
Wake up to the sounds of the Amazon rainforest and enjoy a delicious breakfast before setting off for one of Tambopata’s greatest natural treasures—Lake Sandoval, a spectacular oxbow lake located within the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in the Peruvian Amazon.
We begin with a motorized boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to the entrance of the reserve. From there, we follow a guided one-hour rainforest trail through ancient tropical forest, where your naturalist guide will help you discover towering giant trees, medicinal plants, colorful butterflies, orchids, and the incredible diversity of birds, insects, and mammals that thrive beneath the rainforest canopy.
Upon reaching Lake Sandoval, we board a traditional paddle canoe and glide silently across its mirror-like waters. This pristine lake is one of the best places in the Peruvian Amazon to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Keep watch for the endangered giant river otter, black caimans, turtles basking on fallen logs, hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, cormorants, monkeys moving through the trees, and countless other species that call this remarkable ecosystem home.
After spending time exploring the lake and its surrounding wetlands, we return to our Amazon jungle lodge for a relaxing lunch and some time to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the rainforest.
In the late afternoon, we head back onto the river to experience the breathtaking Amazon sunset. As the golden light reflects across the Madre de Dios River, many animals become active during this transition between day and night. This is an excellent opportunity to spot sloths, capybaras, river birds, and other wildlife along the riverbanks while enjoying one of the most beautiful moments in the Amazon.
After dinner, we venture into the forest on a guided night walk, revealing a completely different side of the rainforest. Equipped with flashlights, we search for tree frogs, insects, spiders, nocturnal reptiles, sleeping birds, and other fascinating creatures that emerge only after dark. Your guide will explain the unique adaptations that allow these animals to survive in the Amazon’s nighttime environment.
At the end of another extraordinary day in the Tambopata National Reserve, we return to our jungle lodge for a peaceful night surrounded by the unforgettable sounds of the Amazon rainforest.
Day 3 – Canopy and River Adventure
After breakfast in the morning, we continue our adventure with a peaceful kayaking excursion on the Madre de Dios River. Paddling quietly through calm waters offers a unique opportunity to observe the rainforest from river level, where kingfishers, herons, turtles, and other aquatic wildlife are often seen along the shoreline.
Our journey then takes us to the canopy adventure center, where we walk a short forest trail to the base of a 20-meter observation tower. After climbing above the forest floor, we cross a network of suspension bridges stretching through the rainforest canopy. This elevated ecosystem is home to a remarkable diversity of birds, butterflies, orchids, bromeliads, and mammals that spend much of their lives in the treetops. From this privileged viewpoint, you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the endless Amazon rainforest while learning about the importance of the canopy in one of the world’s richest ecosystems.
After returning to the lodge, we enjoy our final lunch in the Amazon and have time to pack before beginning our journey back to Puerto Maldonado. We transfer you by boat and vehicle to the airport, bus station, or your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable three-day expedition through the Tambopata National Reserve and the heart of the Peruvian Amazon.

Great Experience.
This is what you come to the Amazon to do. We had a fantastic guide, Fernando, nothing was too much trouble, what ever we wanted to see he would arrange it, from wild bird clay licks, animal hides, river trips, canopy viewing and so on, it was a great experience.
