ITINERARY – (FIRST Day)

Day 1 – Amazon Wildlife, Kayaking to Monkey Island, Canopy Walk, and Night Exploration

Your Amazon adventure begins with a scenic motorboat journey into the Tambopata Reserve area, where the rainforest becomes home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. Upon arrival, you will settle into a welcoming jungle lodge built with traditional wooden construction, surrounded by tropical vegetation and the natural sounds of the Amazon.

After settling in, we will enjoy a relaxing kayaking excursion along the river. This beginner-friendly activity is suitable for most visitors and includes high-quality life jackets and the support of an accompanying motorboat for additional safety. As we paddle, keep an eye out for tropical birds, herons, kingfishers, and other wildlife along the riverbanks.

Our next stop is Monkey Island, where you may observe capuchin monkeys moving through the vegetation and searching for food. Depending on the day, you might also spot squirrel monkeys and other primates in the surrounding forest. Watching these agile animals in their natural environment offers a memorable introduction to Amazon wildlife.

After lunch, we will explore the forest canopy through a canopy walk and an exciting zip-line experience. From above the forest floor, you will have opportunities to observe birds perched among the treetops, including toucans, parrots, and other colorful rainforest species when conditions are favorable. The elevated walkways also offer a different perspective on the dense vegetation and the many layers of the Amazon rainforest.

Later enjoy some time around the jungle lodge, where butterflies, tropical birds, and small wildlife may visit the gardens and surrounding vegetation. The afternoon is an excellent opportunity to relax, photograph the natural surroundings, and watch the changing colors of the rainforest as the sun sets.

As night approaches, we will head out for an exciting nocturnal wildlife excursion, either by boat to search for caimans along the riverbanks or on a guided night walk through the forest, depending on weather conditions. During these explorations, we may encounter caimans, frogs, insects, spiders, and other nocturnal creatures that become active after dark.

This first day combines adventure, comfortable accommodation in a traditional wooden jungle lodge, and opportunities to discover the remarkable wildlife of the Peruvian Amazon.

Second Day

Day 2 – Lake Sandoval Wildlife: Giant Otters, Black Caimans, Monkeys, and Amazonian Birds

We will start early in the morning with a guided walk through the lush rainforest toward Lake Sandoval, one of the most remarkable wildlife destinations in the Tambopata Reserve area. Along the forest trails, keep your eyes open for monkeys moving through the treetops, including howler monkeys, brown capuchins, and squirrel monkeys. With a little luck, we may also spot agoutis, colorful butterflies, toucans, and other birds feeding among the trees.

Upon reaching the lake, we will explore its peaceful waters by canoe, searching for some of the Amazon’s most fascinating animals. Lake Sandoval is particularly famous for its giant river otters, which can sometimes be observed swimming, fishing, or interacting in family groups. We will also look for large black caimans resting along the water’s edge, as well as turtles and other aquatic wildlife.

The lake is a paradise for birdwatchers, offering opportunities to observe hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, cormorants, and colorful macaws flying above the canopy. Depending on the season and wildlife activity, we may also encounter other waterbirds and raptors searching for fish in the surrounding wetlands.

Later, we will visit an observation tower to admire the breathtaking landscape of Lake Sandoval from above. This elevated viewpoint provides a different perspective on the flooded forest and offers excellent opportunities to spot birds perched in the treetops or flying across the lake.

After this unforgettable wildlife experience, we will return to the lodge area and prepare for our journey back to Puerto Maldonado, arriving in the city at approximately 5:00 p.m.

This day is dedicated to discovering the extraordinary biodiversity of Lake Sandoval, with special opportunities to observe giant river otters, black caimans, monkeys, macaws, and the many bird species that make this Amazonian lake so special.
