Day 1 – Welcome to the Peruvian Amazon
Upon your arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport or the bus station, our friendly team will be there to warmly welcome you and assist with your transfer to the river port, Puerto Capitanía. From there, we will begin a scenic motorized boat ride along the beautiful Madre de Dios River as we travel to our comfortable jungle lodge, surrounded by the incredible beauty of the Amazon rainforest.
After checking into your room and meeting your experienced local guide, we will enjoy a relaxing introductory walk along the lodge’s rainforest trails. During this guided hike, you will discover the amazing plants, towering trees, colorful birds, insects, and other wildlife that make this ecosystem one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Your guide will share fascinating stories and insights about the Amazon’s unique flora and fauna, making this a wonderful introduction to the rainforest.
After a delicious lunch at the lodge, we will take another boat trip to Monkey Island, a small island where several species of monkeys live freely in their natural habitat. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe their playful behavior, take photos, and learn about the important role they play in the Amazon ecosystem.
As evening approaches, we will head out on an exciting night boat excursion to experience the rainforest after dark. With the help of our flashlights, we will search for capybaras resting along the riverbanks and look for the glowing red eyes of caimans reflected in the water. Your guide will explain the behavior and habits of these fascinating animals while you enjoy the peaceful and mysterious atmosphere of the Amazon at night.
After this unforgettable adventure, we will return to our jungle lodge, where you can relax and enjoy a peaceful night surrounded by the soothing sounds of the rainforest, preparing for another exciting day of exploration.
Day 2 – Lake Sandoval Adventure
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will begin an unforgettable adventure to Lake Sandoval, one of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. From our jungle lodge, we will take a scenic boat ride to the port, where our excursion into the rainforest begins.
At the entrance to the reserve, we will enjoy a peaceful 1-hour guided walk through the lush Amazon rainforest. Along the trail, your knowledgeable guide will help you discover the incredible biodiversity of the jungle, pointing out fascinating plants, colorful birds, butterflies, insects, and, if we are lucky, monkeys and other wildlife hidden among the trees.
When we arrive at Lake Sandoval, we will board a traditional canoe and gently paddle across the calm, mirror-like waters of this spectacular oxbow lake. Surrounded by pristine rainforest, Lake Sandoval is home to an amazing variety of wildlife, including giant river otters, turtles, hoatzins, herons, monkeys, black caimans, and many other species that make this protected area so special. The peaceful beauty of the lake makes it one of the true highlights of any visit to the Peruvian Amazon.
After exploring the lake, we will return to our jungle lodge for a relaxing lunch and some time to rest. Later in the afternoon, we will head out to admire the beautiful Amazon sunset, one of the most magical moments in the rainforest, as the sky fills with warm colors reflected on the river.
Following sunset, we will begin our journey toward a second Amazon reserve, home to the largest macaw clay lick in the region. To make the early morning excursion more comfortable, we will return to Puerto Maldonado and spend the night at a lodge located near the city and the highway. This allows us to depart very early the next morning, around 3:30 a.m., for our 170 km journey to the famous macaw clay lick, where an unforgettable wildlife experience awaits.
Day 3 – Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick Experience
Our day begins very early at 3:30 a.m., as we set out for one of the most incredible wildlife experiences in the Peruvian Amazon. We will travel by car for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to the community of Filadelfia, where our river adventure begins.
From Filadelfia, we will board a motorized boat and travel for about 1 hour upstream along the Tambopata River, enjoying the peaceful beauty of the rainforest as the sun rises. This early morning journey is truly unforgettable, and with a little luck, we may spot wildlife along the riverbanks, including jaguars, capybaras, caimans, monkeys, anacondas, and many species of birds that inhabit the Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon arriving at the famous Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, you will witness an extraordinary natural spectacle. Hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws gather on the clay wall, creating a vibrant display of color, sound, and flight. Your guide will explain why these birds, along with many other animals, visit the clay lick every day throughout the year, as the mineral-rich clay plays an important role in their diet and digestion.
We will spend the morning enjoying this amazing wildlife show, which usually lasts from 6:00 a.m. until around 11:00 a.m. During the experience, we will serve a delicious breakfast with a privileged view of the macaw clay lick, allowing you to enjoy nature from one of the best observation points in the Amazon.
After this unforgettable experience, we will begin our return journey to Puerto Maldonado. At the end of the tour, we will transfer you directly to Puerto Maldonado Airport. If you are staying at a hotel in the city or traveling by night bus, we will be happy to drop you off at your hotel or at the Plaza de Armas (Main Square) for your convenience.

Our most favorite part of Peru!
My husband and I, along with our two best friends, spent 16 days backpacking through southern Peru. The Amazon rainforest experience with this tour group was our favorite excursion! Rodrigo was our guide for the 3 days/two nights that we stayed and he was absolutely fantastic. There are a lot of reviews about how things

Relaxing
We had a very nice time at this lodge. For us it was a nice combination of activity with rest times. Our guides were knowledgeable and our favorite activity was going to see the macaws, parakeets and parrots at the clay lick.

Jungle
Walking through the jungle was such an amazing experience, despite the heat, humidity, and mud (last part of rainy season). Our Inkaterra guide, Saay, made the tours.
