DAY 1 – PUERTO MALDONADO / MONKEY ISLAND / JUNGLE LODGE
Your Amazon adventure begins with a warm welcome at Puerto Maldonado Airport or the bus station, where our team will meet you and assist with your transfer to Puerto Capitanía, the main river port. From here, we board a motorized boat and begin our journey downstream along the Madre de Dios River, surrounded by the sounds and scenery of the Amazon rainforest.
We arrive at our jungle lodge, where you will have time to settle into your comfortable room and meet your naturalist guide. Once you are ready, we will take our first walk along the surrounding rainforest trails. During this introductory hike, your guide will help you discover the remarkable diversity of Amazonian plants and animals, explaining how different species interact within this complex ecosystem.
After lunch, we continue our exploration by boat, traveling to Monkey Island, a small forested island in the Madre de Dios River. This area provides an excellent opportunity to observe native monkeys in their natural environment, including species such as brown capuchins and squirrel monkeys. Your guide will help you spot movement among the trees and explain their behavior, feeding habits, and role in the rainforest ecosystem.
As daylight fades, we begin a fascinating night wildlife excursion. Using flashlights, we explore the riverbanks and nearby areas in search of nocturnal wildlife, particularly caimans and capybaras. One of the most memorable moments is seeing the distinctive red reflections of caiman eyes shining from the darkness. Your guide will explain the natural history and behavior of these ancient Amazonian reptiles while helping you observe them safely and respectfully.
After this exciting first encounter with the Amazon at night, we return to the lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
DAY 2 – TAMBOPATA RESERVE / LAKE SANDOVAL / CANOEING & WILDLIFE
We begin the day with an early departure toward Lake Sandoval, one of the most remarkable oxbow lakes within the Tambopata rainforest. From the lodge, we travel approximately 10 minutes by motorized boat to the river port located near the entrance to the lake.
From here, we enter the Tambopata National Reserve and begin a fascinating rainforest hike of approximately one hour. Along the trail, your naturalist guide will introduce you to the extraordinary plants, trees, insects, birds, and other wildlife that inhabit this protected Amazonian ecosystem. The walk is an important part of the experience, allowing us to observe the forest at a slower pace and understand how its different species are connected.
Upon reaching Lake Sandoval, we board traditional canoes and paddle quietly across its calm waters. Moving silently through the lake gives us an excellent opportunity to observe wildlife without disturbing it. Depending on conditions and luck, we may encounter hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, monkeys, caimans, black alligators, and giant river otters, among many other species that depend on this unique wetland habitat.
After exploring the lake and surrounding forest, we return to the lodge for lunch and some time to relax and recover.
In the afternoon, we continue our Amazon exploration with a sunset and wildlife excursion. As the temperature begins to cool, the rainforest becomes increasingly active. We may have opportunities to spot sloths, capybaras, caimans, and a variety of birds and monkeys along the river and forest edges.
DAY 3 – PARROT CLAY LICK / CANOPY WALK / KAYAKING / FISHING
We begin this exciting day very early, around 5:00 a.m., when the rainforest is still cool and quiet. We board our motorized boat and travel approximately 1 hour upstream along the Madre de Dios River, passing the outskirts of Puerto Maldonado on our way a fascinating site where colorful parrots gather along the exposed riverbank.
At the parrot clay lick, we observe one of the Amazon’s most spectacular natural events. Different species of parrots congregate on the mineral-rich clay wall, creating a vibrant display of colorful wings, calls, and movement as they feed on the clay. This behavior, known as geophagy, is an important part of the ecology of many Amazonian parrots. With patience and favorable conditions, we may also spot sloths resting quietly among the trees along the riverbanks.
After this memorable wildlife encounter, we return to the lodge for breakfast and some time to relax.
Later in the morning, we begin a different kind of Amazon adventure. We take our kayaks onto the Madre de Dios River, paddling along the calm waters while surrounded by the immense rainforest. We continue toward the adventure center, where a short walk of approximately five minutes takes us to the base of a 20-meter-high observation tower.
From the tower, we cross a series of suspension bridges through the forest canopy, reaching a completely different perspective of the rainforest. High above the ground, we can observe the structure of the jungle from the treetops, where many birds, insects, and other animals spend much of their lives. Your guide will explain how the canopy functions as one of the most biologically active layers of the Amazon forest.
After returning to the lodge, we enjoy lunch and have time to rest before our afternoon activity.
Later, we head back onto the river for a traditional Amazon fishing excursion. With the guidance of our local team, we explore quiet areas along the river where we can try our luck fishing and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding rainforest.
At the end of the afternoon, we return to the lodge for dinner and spend another unforgettable night surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.
DAY 4 – NATIVE FAMILY / PUERTO MALDONADO / AIRPORT OR BUS STATION
After breakfast, around 9:30 a.m., we will visit a local Machiguenga family, offering you an authentic opportunity to learn about the traditions, daily life, and cultural heritage of one of the Indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon.
During our visit, we will have time to interact respectfully with the family, share conversation, and learn about their connection with the rainforest. Your guide will help explain aspects of their traditional knowledge, customs, and relationship with the surrounding natural environment, providing a meaningful cultural perspective that complements our wildlife experiences.
After the visit, we return to the lodge to collect our belongings and prepare for departure. We then board our motorized boat and begin our journey back along the Madre de Dios River toward Puerto Maldonado, enjoying a final view of the rainforest that has been our home during this Amazon adventure.
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our team will assist with your transfer to the airport, bus station, or your hotel in the city, according to your travel plans.
