DAY 1 – PUERTO MALDONADO / MONKEY ISLAND
Your Amazon adventure begins with a warm welcome at Puerto Maldonado Airport or the bus station, where our team will meet you and transfer you to Puerto Capitanía, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. From here, we board a motorized boat and travel along the beautiful Madre de Dios River, surrounded by lush rainforest and incredible tropical scenery.
Upon arrival, you will check into your private wooden bungalow, carefully designed in traditional Amazon style and surrounded by the rainforest for privacy and tranquility. Each bungalow is built with natural wood, offering a peaceful space where you can relax while listening to the sounds of the jungle and enjoying an authentic Amazon rainforest experience.
After settling into your bungalow, we begin our first guided walk through the rainforest trails surrounding the lodge. Your naturalist guide will introduce you to the incredible biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon, pointing out towering rainforest trees, medicinal plants, colorful birds, insects, and other wildlife that thrive in this rich ecosystem.
Following lunch, we continue by boat to Monkey Island, one of the best places near Puerto Maldonado to observe wild monkeys in their natural habitat. Here, you may encounter brown capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys moving through the forest canopy while learning about their behavior and importance within the Amazon ecosystem.
As night falls, we embark on an exciting night wildlife exploration along the riverbanks in search of black caimans, capybaras, and other nocturnal animals. Using flashlights, we look for the glowing red eyes of caimans reflected in the darkness while your guide shares fascinating insights into the secret life of the Amazon after sunset.
We return to the lodge for dinner and spend the night in your private wooden bungalow, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the rainforest and complete jungle privacy.
DAY 2 – TAMBOPATA RESERVE / LAKE SANDOVAL / CANOEING & WILDLIFE
Get ready for one of the most exciting days of your Amazon adventure! We set out early toward Lake Sandoval, a spectacular oxbow lake hidden deep within the rainforest and surrounded by the extraordinary biodiversity of the Tambopata National Reserve. From the lodge, we travel by motorized boat for approximately 10 minutes to the river port near the entrance to the lake.
From here, our adventure continues on foot. We enter the Tambopata National Reserve and follow a rainforest trail for approximately one hour, accompanied by your naturalist guide. Keep your eyes open—the forest is alive with movement! Along the trail, we search for colorful birds, curious monkeys, fascinating insects, towering trees, palms, medicinal plants, and other creatures that are often revealed only to those who move quietly through the jungle. Every step brings us deeper into one of the most biologically rich environments in the Amazon.
When we reach Lake Sandoval, we exchange the forest trail for traditional canoes and paddle into the heart of this beautiful wetland. The peaceful movement of the canoe allows us to explore the lake quietly, getting close to wildlife without disturbing it. Along the shores and among the vegetation, we may encounter hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, monkeys, caimans, black alligators, and giant river otters. With patience and a little luck, the lake can reveal some of its most fascinating inhabitants as they feed, swim, rest, or move through the surrounding forest.
After an unforgettable exploration of Lake Sandoval, we make our way back through the rainforest and return to the lodge for lunch and time to relax.
In the afternoon, the adventure begins again with a sunset wildlife excursion. As the intense heat of the day fades and golden light spreads across the rainforest, many Amazonian animals become more active. Along the riverbanks and forest edges, we keep watch for sloths resting high in the trees, capybaras near the water, caimans emerging along the river, colorful birds, and different species of monkeys. As darkness approaches, the sounds of the jungle grow louder, creating an unforgettable atmosphere and revealing another side of life in the Amazon.
DAY 3 – KAYAKING / CANOPY WALK / AMAZON FISHING
In the morning, we set out for a different perspective of the Amazon, beginning with a kayaking excursion on the Madre de Dios River. Paddling quietly along the river, we move through a landscape of towering rainforest, riverbank vegetation, and constantly changing wildlife activity. The calm waters offer an excellent opportunity to observe birds and other species along the river margins while experiencing the forest at water level.
We continue toward the adventure center, where a short walk of approximately five minutes brings us to the base of a 20-meter-high observation tower. From here, we ascend into the forest canopy and cross a series of suspension bridges connecting the treetops. High above the forest floor, the Amazon reveals another world—one filled with birds, insects, epiphytes, and other wildlife that depend on the canopy for food, shelter, and movement. Your naturalist guide will explain how this upper layer of the rainforest functions as one of the most biologically active habitats in the Amazon.
After returning to the lodge, we enjoy lunch and have time to relax before continuing our afternoon exploration.
Later, we return to the Madre de Dios River for a traditional Amazon fishing experience. Guided by our local team, we explore quieter sections of the river and its surrounding waters, looking for native freshwater fish. This activity is not only about fishing but also about understanding the aquatic ecosystem and the important role the river plays in Amazonian life. Along the way, we remain alert for birds, riverbank wildlife, and other signs of activity in this rich riparian environment.
As the afternoon light begins to fade, we return to the lodge for dinner. Once darkness settles over the rainforest, the sounds of frogs, insects, nocturnal birds, and other creatures create a completely different Amazon experience—another unforgettable night deep in the jungle.
DAY 4 – NATIVE FAMILY / PUERTO MALDONADO / AIRPORT OR BUS STATION
After breakfast, around 9:30 a.m., we visit a local Machiguenga family, offering an authentic opportunity to learn about the traditions, daily life, and cultural heritage of one of the Indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon.
During the visit, you will have time to interact respectfully with the family, share conversation, and learn about their close relationship with the rainforest. Your guide will explain aspects of their traditional knowledge, customs, and everyday way of life, creating a meaningful cultural experience that complements the wildlife and nature activities of your Amazon adventure.
After the visit, we return to the lodge to collect our belongings and prepare for departure. We then board our motorized boat and travel back along the Madre de Dios River toward Puerto Maldonado, enjoying a final journey through the rainforest and a last opportunity to appreciate the scenery and wildlife along the river.
Once we arrive in Puerto Maldonado, our team will assist you with your transfer to the airport, bus station, or your hotel in the city, depending on your travel plans.
Important departure recommendation: To allow enough time for the return journey from the jungle and the transfer into Puerto Maldonado, we recommend scheduling your flight for after 3:00 p.m. If you are continuing your journey by bus, we recommend choosing a night bus. This provides a more comfortable schedule and helps avoid rushing on the final day of your Amazon adventure.

You MUST do a jungle/lake/river hike!
You see so many birds, animals & insects – many really close up – but in complete safety and even for a couple of old fatties like us it was easy – no hills, for example!
