ITINERARY – (FIRST Day)

Day 1: Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, our team will welcome you and transfer you to our office for a short route briefing before beginning your Amazon adventure. From there, we travel by boat for approximately 50 minutes along the Madre de Dios River to our jungle lodge. The lodge is simple and rustic, designed to blend naturally with the rainforest environment, yet it offers all the essential comforts needed for a pleasant and authentic stay in the heart of the Amazon.

After settling into your private bungalow, we begin an introductory jungle walk deep into the Tambopata rainforest. Guided by a local expert, you will discover towering ancient trees, medicinal plants, and the incredible biodiversity that makes this region world-famous. Along the trail, there are excellent chances to encounter colorful toucans, parrots, orioles, butterflies, monkeys, and many other fascinating rainforest creatures. Being inside the Tambopata National Reserve, with over 278,000 protected hectares, provides an unforgettable opportunity to experience untouched Amazon nature at its best.

Following lunch, we continue to Monkey Island, a small forested island inhabited by different monkey species such as squirrel monkeys and brown capuchins, often seen jumping through the trees near visitors. As the sun begins to set, we head out by boat for a nighttime wildlife excursion along the riverbanks, searching for caimans with flashlights while listening to the sounds of the jungle after dark. With some luck, you may even spot capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, resting near the water. Return to the lodge for dinner and a peaceful overnight stay surrounded by rainforest sounds.

Second Day

Day 2: Very early in the morning, we travel by boat to the entrance of the famous Lake Sandoval. After registering at the reserve control point, we begin a scenic 3-kilometer walk through pristine rainforest trails rich in wildlife and giant trees. Your guide will help you spot remarkable species such as hoatzins, herons, monkeys, tropical birds, and black caimans hidden within the wetlands.

Once we reach the lake, we board a silent canoe to explore one of the Amazon’s most beautiful oxbow lakes. This peaceful area is home to giant river otters, one of the rainforest’s rarest and most endangered mammals. You may also observe turtles, exotic birds, monkeys, and the impressive black caiman that inhabits the lake’s calm waters. The combination of mirror-like reflections, dense jungle scenery, and abundant wildlife makes this one of the most memorable experiences in Tambopata.

After returning to the lodge for a traditional Amazonian lunch, you will have free time to relax at leasure. In the evening, we venture on a guided night walk around the ecolodge, where the rainforest transforms completely after sunset. Equipped with flashlights, we search for nocturnal insects, frogs, tarantulas, and other fascinating creatures that emerge during the night. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Third Day

Day 3: After breakfast, we begin an exciting canopy adventure that allows you to experience the rainforest from above. Climbing towers and suspended walkways, we reach platforms nearly 30 meters above the forest floor, offering spectacular panoramic views across the Amazon canopy. Along the way, you may spot colorful birds, orchids growing high in the trees, and wildlife moving through the treetops.

For adventurous travelers, there may also be an optional zipline experience if weather conditions allow, providing both incredible scenery and an adrenaline-filled perspective of the jungle.

After lunch, we continue with a kayaking excursion on the Madre de Dios River. Equipped with life jackets and accompanied by a safety boat, we paddle through calm waters while observing riverside birds and rainforest landscapes rarely seen from land. As evening arrives, another guided night walk gives us a final opportunity to discover the Amazon’s nocturnal wildlife, including amphibians, reptiles, insects, and many hidden rainforest surprises. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Fourth Day

Day 4: On your final morning in the Amazon, enjoy one last opportunity to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the rainforest. Sunrise is one of the most magical moments in the jungle, as the forest awakens with bird songs, monkey calls, and the sounds of nature all around you. You may take photographs by the river, relax in the lodge gardens, or enjoy a short morning walk while keeping an eye out for wildlife that often visits the area.

After breakfast, we begin our return journey by boat back to Puerto Maldonado. Along the way, you can reflect on the unforgettable wildlife encounters, breathtaking landscapes, and authentic rainforest experiences shared during your stay. Upon arrival in the city, we transfer you either to the airport or your hotel, marking the end of an incredible Amazon adventure in Tambopata.

Not very communicative or friendly

The nature and location were great, but the nature staff were not very communicative or friendly- right from the start at the hostel where we checked in. My group stayed for 3 nights, 4 days and signed up for the Chuncho Clay Lick experience. We had about 5 different guides, and a very brief intro

How can you not take a hike in the jungle?

It may be hot, it may be humid, it may be buggy … but just go and do it.  There is no other way to get a sense of what the Amazonian jungle is like.
