Day 1.- Puerto Maldonado river journey / Monkey Island / Night Cayman search
Your journey into the heart of the Amazon begins with a warm welcome upon arrival at the airport or bus station in Puerto Maldonado. From here, you’ll be transferred to the river port, where your rainforest adventure truly begins.
We travel along the rich waters of the Madre de Dios River by motorized boat for approximately 15 minutes, entering one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. Along the way, keep your eyes open—this river corridor often reveals birdlife, river turtles, and occasionally capybaras resting along the banks.
Upon arrival at Amazon Lodge Tambopat, you’ll settle into comfortable rooms designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding rainforest. After a short rest, your expert naturalist guide will lead you on an interpretive walk through the lodge’s forest trails. This is your first immersive introduction to Amazonian ecology, where towering trees, medicinal plants, and hidden wildlife form a complex and fascinating ecosystem. Expect to encounter insects, birds, and possibly primates, while your guide shares expert insights into their behaviors and ecological roles.
After a nourishing lunch, we continue by boat for about 20 minutes to reach Monkey Island. This protected area serves as a refuge for several monkey species, offering excellent opportunities to observe them in a semi-natural environment. Depending on the day, you may encounter squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and other curious primates moving through the canopy.
As dusk settles, the rainforest transforms into a world of nocturnal activity. Equipped with flashlights, we embark on a river exploration in search of wildlife. This is the perfect time to observe the world’s largest rodent, the Capybara, often seen grazing along the riverbanks.
We then focus on one of the Amazon’s most fascinating nocturnal predators—the Caiman. Their glowing red eyes reflect in the darkness as they rest near the water’s edge. Your guide will provide detailed explanations about their behavior, adaptations, and ecological importance within the wetland ecosystem.
After this unforgettable introduction to Amazonian wildlife, we return to the lodge, where the natural sounds of the rainforest create a truly immersive atmosphere for a peaceful night deep in the jungle.
DAY 2 – Tambopata National Reserve / Lake Sandoval – Canoe Exploration & Rainforest Trails
After an early breakfast, we set out toward the pristine waters of Lake Sandoval, one of the most biologically rich oxbow lakes in the Peruvian Amazon. A short 10-minute boat ride from the lodge brings us to the trailhead, where our guided journey into the Tambopata National Reserve begins.
The walk to the lake takes approximately one hour along well-preserved rainforest trails. Along the way, your expert naturalist guide will interpret the forest in detail—revealing towering canopy species, medicinal plants, and the subtle signs of wildlife such as monkeys, macaws, and elusive understory birds.
Upon arrival at the lake, we board a quiet, non-motorized canoe to glide across its calm, reflective waters. This silent approach allows for exceptional wildlife observation. Families of Giant otter may be seen hunting and communicating, while striking bird species such as the Hoatzin and Capped heron inhabit the lakeshore. With luck, black caimans and freshwater turtles can also be observed basking along the edges of the lake.
After this immersive experience, we return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, we prepare for our journey back to Puerto Maldonado, concluding a day rich in close encounters with the extraordinary biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest.
