Detailed Tour Itinerary

  • DAY 1

We Begin our tour embarking at the dock of Puerto Maldonado around the river Madre de Dios and right after leaving port sail direct through the confluence of 2 big rivers of the Amazon, the Madre de Dios and the Tambopata River; the fascinating view of the assembly of these two rivers opens us to feel a greater connection with Our mother earth. The trip of an hour downriver to the entry to the National Reserve of Tambopata is full of intense wildlife. After a brief walk and passing the access point to the protected section of the Reserve, we enter the jungle and follow the 5km walk to the Sandoval Lake. After arriving at Sandoval lake we can easily bath in the warm waters, crowded with piranhas, electrical eels, black color caimans and sweet-water manta rays, and it’s guaranteed to be a really pleasant bath due to the increased temperature of the water. After swimming, we will depart for a delicious picnic lunch provided on the beach. The afternoon takes place with us taking to the water in dugout boats for an exploration of the abundant wildlife which makes its home in and around the lake. If we are fortunate we will see lively giant river otters, an animal that has been saved from the point of extinction here, around the waters of this preserved lake. As the afternoon draws to an end we disembark at a place closer to the river and walk the 3km trail returning to the Madre de Dios river, where our motorboat is waiting to carry on downriver to our lodge where dinner is waiting. At night we will go by boat for a caiman search which will give us the opportunity to see from close quarters these spectacular animals that lay on the warm sand of the river banks. Also the largest rodent on the planet named capybara, may be observed at sunset.

  • DAY 2

We rise early for a special glimpse into the marvelous world of rainforest wildlife, benefiting from the fact that many creatures, both mammals and birds, are active in the early dawn hours. The forest is congested, with wildlife and we will see multi-coloured butterflies, macaws, parrots and tanagers, leaf cutter ants and monkeys. Both in the hike through the woods and the view from the 27m high canopy pathway at dawn is impressive. The adventure place circuit is reached by climbing a tower system and stairway that ascend to the tree tops and a platform at 27m above the floor of the forest. You may feel the air flow on your face as you get across the hanging bridge, that leads to a platform wrapped throughout the huge trunk of an ironwood tree, one of the thickest and strongest tree to be found in the rainforest; orchids and other aerial plants growing between the high branches is usually seen at close hand as the nests of many birds. We come back across the canopy bridge and go up to the high platform that marks the beginning of the zip-line wire, almost 200m long, which we fly through the air flow like eagles to a platform. The exceptional views are only harmonized by the enjoyment of overcoming our fears as well as the adrenaline that flow through us. The 75m long log walkway, hanging above the ground, leads off this system, a risky balancing act takes us to the platform at the beginning of the second zip line, fly back to the tower that come down to the forest floor. Breakfast – a delicious meal of fruit juice, tea or coffee, typical banana chips, eggs, cheese and rice bread. Later we go to the river for kayaking, well safeguarded with high quality life jackets, and followed by a motorboat that ensures extra security; This activity is tranquil and accessible for everyone. Going downstream, carried by the river, or against the riverflow we can easily observe the countless birds that populate this area, otherwise inaccessible from the river bank side. After lunch you will have time for a relaxing nap or integration time, the hammocks are really comfy. Monkey Island After lunch we go by boat to an island located across the river known by locals as the monkeys island. These beautiful animals are used to have contact with human beings and will appear swinging through the treetops, getting down the trunks of the big trees that form their home in order to accept food from visitors. Various diverse species live in harmony because of their habitat being an island. The return upriver to Puerto Maldonado at sunset offers views of an impressive sky mirrored in the waters of one of the largest rivers of the Amazon.
